I have Windows Media Player 11. I can no longer play videos. When I try to play videos I get this "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. One or more codecs required to play the file could not be found". How do I know which codec is missing and needs to be installed? I've reinstalled WMP11 but that didn't help. How can I fix this? Thanks!

it really depends on the kind of file you want to play. windows media player is good for mpeg-3, mpeg-4, and wma fils, but not xvid's and avi's -and especially not the matroska files (mkv). the only reason why i keep it around (it came with my vista) is when i want to play a whole bunch of music files - i don't use itunes, and none of the players i mention below can make a playlist.

vlc is great for avi's and xvid's. a bonus is that with the latest version, you can raise the volume to up to 400 percent of its original volume. but for mkv's, the best option is media player classic - which you can get by downloading the k-lite codec pack. i've provided links to both below.

best option is to download both - neither require that much space anyway. :D and you have a whole range of new options for your videos.

You can download VLC here: http://bitly.com/1lqh7U3 When the built-in media player doesn't work, use VLC.VLC (video lan connect) is a great open source software to play any types of video files. VLC has a built in dvd decodere and works with many different video and audio formats including OGG, MP2, MP3, MP4, DivX, HD codecs like AES3, Raw Dirac, and even support for playing back zipped files.

Go onto google and type in - Media Player Mega Codec pack...

Downlaod the file from one of the sites - it has every codec possible for Media Player.

Failing that - search for VLC player - it's free and plays everything

Installing a codec pack may cause as many problems as it solves - one solution is to download an alternative media player such as vlc or km player that includes all the necessary codecs - both free

If you want to install a codec pack, I advise you install the vista codec pack from Shark007 -

Try downloading this. It points to all the latest codecs you need. It's called K-Lite Codec Pack
