Hey guys this is a new problem that just started yesterday, I'm running on Windows 7, I Downloaded a codec pack because I wasn't able to view some old tutorial recordings i made with Camtasia a while back and since then whenever I open any program like Windows Media player, Windows Movie maker, iTunes, VLC players, MSN or anything to do with Videos/Audio/Webcam it will crash and i get messages in the attached files as soon as they open so I'm unable to use them at all.

I've tried searching for other answers and have had no luck

There are trojans out there these days that disguise themselves as codecs. You may have one.

OK, so you're probably not going to believe me, and you're going to select someone who suggests Malwarebytes or some other program as the best answer. But then you'll realize that it didn't work, and you're still looking for a solution, THEN read this:

I've been a network administrator for over 12 years now. Here's what I do about virus and spyware infections: I backup all the documents, pictures, music, etc., and then I put in the Windows CD and have it format the hard drive and start over. That's the only way to be 100% sure that all of the infections are removed. For backing up the data files, I prefer an online file host (such as http://www.drivehq.com ) instead of a USB drive because recent viruses (like Conflicker) can infect your USB drive.

What should you back up? Almost always these days, if you just back up your "My Documents" folder (and the My Documents folders for other users on the computer), you'll have saved everything. Microsoft and third party software manufacturers are becoming very good at making sure all of your stuff goes into that folder, or a subfolder (such as My Pictures).

For the future, I recommend that you use Mozy Home Free Edition to keep your documents backed up online. Then you won't have to hesitate if you want to ever reformat your computer again. Here is a YouTube video that I made about how to use Mozy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmhAoPCmOdY

I also recommend installing Site Advisor at http://www.siteadvisor.com. It will pop up a red balloon any time you go to a web site that has malicious downloads. It will also put red, yellow, and green icons next to your Google and Yahoo search results.

Lastly, here are my recommendations for anti-virus products:

All antivirus do just as well at detecting viruses. So the best antivirus is a free one. Here are three free ones that you can choose from:

AVG Free Edition: http://free.grisoft.com

Avast 4 Home: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Avira Antivir Personal: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html

PC Tools Antivirus Free Edition: http://www.pctools.com/free-antivirus/

Comodo Antivirus: http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/antivirus.html

I've been getting into Comodo lately: http://antivirus.comodo.com/

Actually, I don't know how well the anti-virus component of it works, but the thing is this: it has a "sandbox" feature. Unless you specifically tell Comodo to allow permanent changes, everything that you do in your browser gets undone when you restart your computer.

Here is a Hak5 podcast that showcases Comodo's sandbox feature:http://www.hak5.org/episodes/episode-703

It may just be a virus. Run a popular scanner like McAffee, Norton, ClamWin, Avast, or AVG.

Otherwise, delete the codec pack, and open the Files in VLC. I've never encountered a media file that VLC couldn't open.

can you try uninstalling these codecs you installed? After that restart and see what happens. It is possible one of these contained a virus so that may be what is causing you problems. Where did you get these codecs from?

I personally have always found the stuff included in k-lite codec pack to be more then enough for basically everything, I would suggest trying installing that and see if it doesn't fix the problem. (link below).

btw your error screen shots don't really tell us anything, we really need to see the error report so we can figure out what caused the crash.

You downloaded a codec pack whilst running VLC player? VLC comes inclusive of its' own codec pack, therefore you may have a conflicting install.

Remove VLC and all codec packs, reboot and try a fresh install of ONE codec pack.

Personally I have always used K-Lite codec pack as it has worked flawlessly with all formats without issues.

The K-Lite Codec Pack does solve the problem of the Video Players crashing. However, to solve the issue of Windows Explorer crashing, follow the below steps: 1. Click Start, then Run. 2. Type [regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll] without the brackets. 3. Click the OK button. 4. After an instant, you will get a dialog with the message "DllUnregisterServer in shmedia.dll succeded.".

Since you tried the System Restore, that is out...

My next suggestion would be to try a System Repair.

Since Windows Vista and 7 no longer uses the "Repair a Windows Installation"

option, here is a link to a site that tells how to do a system repair without losing

previous files.

Although, it is always a good idea to BACKUP your files to disks or to another

drive first.

How to Do a Repair Install to Fix Windows 7

Hope this helps.

your codec pack is conflicting, uninstall that codec pack and download and install K-Lite codec pack

i have K-lite codec pack and it works flawlessly alongside other things, also using win7

Edit: in add/remove programs it should have "(something) Codec Pack"
