Easy way to edit .mov files?

Question

So I've been editing .wmv files and whatnot for months, and when I try editing .mov files it just gets really laggy and it irks me a lot. Same with .mts files too. They lag or don't work at all when I edit them. I use Sony Vegas most of the time and sometimes WMM. It gets really laggy and annoys the heck out of me. I've tried converting them but when the file is really big it'll take hours. -____- please help! Is there any easier way to edit/convert these files using a PC? IF ONLY I HAD A MAC :(
