How can I create fields in Word 2010 without mail merge?

I need to create form documents, where the field might include things such as a person's name, salutation, other names (let's say, for example, Friend 1, Friend 2, Friend 3), etc. I'd like the name of the field to show so that I can just manually type in the info to customize the document, but the document would serve as a template. Can I do this without having to create a data source/mail merge document?

There are 3 documents in a mail merge- a data source, a main document with the fields in it and a merged document.

Create a data source with only one or two names in it that has the fields with the exact names of the fields in your final data source document. Use this data source to create the main document. As a final step when you do a mail merge, point the main document to the real data source.

The field names in the 2 data sources must be exact matches. Close is not good enough.

I don't have access to 2010 right now, but look at the "Ask" and "Fill-In" merge fields in Help.

In 2003 they're in the MailMerge category, but don't require a second document to work.

I take care of that mail merge continues to be a thanks to flow, because it operates off a database (even basically an Excel spreadsheet) of customer names and addresses (and possibly different archives). although, instead of a unmarried kind letter, might want to you get by potential of with countless, each with the certain fields you may want to incredibly be replacing by potential of hand? in case you are able to, they can all use a similar customer database. in case you experience you prefer to attempt this, write one kind letter and get it to artwork with mail merge. upon getting that done, it will be common to keep a duplicate of that kind, substitute the fields you want replaced, and positioned it aside as 2d kind letter. the finest purpose is to have a customer database which may be utilized for each type of letters and mailings. wish that enables.
