Print thumbnails
To fit multiple pages on a single page, you can create thumbnails—small preview versions of your document. Thumbnails are useful for verifying content and organization. Where appropriate, InDesign automatically changes the paper orientation to provide the best fit of the page to the paper; however, you’ll need to reset the original orientation if you deselect the Thumbnails option.
Note: When you print thumbnails, printer’s marks and any items in the bleed and/or slug areas are excluded.
1. In the Setup area of the Print dialog box, select Thumbnails.
2. In the menu, choose the number of thumbnails per page.

Question regarding printing InDesign Thumbnails (in the Print Dialogue
box): Is there a way to get rid of the silly drop shadow that the app puts
behind the thumbnails when it prints?

When printing thumbnails to a PDF, where does the file go? In CS2 it used to
go on the desktop. Can't find it in CS3...?

I don't know. When I print to PDF, the file is saved on my desktop. Perhaps you could use the system Find utility to locate the file.

I don't think there's a way to take off the thumbnail outlines/shadows when printing thumbnails in InDesign... but there SHOULD be. As a designer who is constantly printing pages of thumbnails to compare options... I am wishing all the time that the shadow was gone--it makes evaluating the work so much harder.

Good idea. Please submit a feature request.

I seem to be having trouble printing thumbnails with adobe indesign CS3.
My document is 72 pages long. When I go, Print-> setup and try to select
thumb nails, the thumbnails section id greyed-out, Is this because my
document is too large? or have I simply failed to select some other option
that will not allow me to print thumbnails? I hope someone can explain why
this would be happening, Thanks.

Sorry Bob, but I seem to be having trouble, posting my comment in the correct area of the site. Will the user account I have used to enable me to comment here grant me access to the user-user forums? I've been reading through the do's and dont's and I've searched through previous forums for evidence of prior coverage of my question and it seems that this particular question has not been asked. sorry to be a pain but I genuinely canno't seem to be able to find where it is that I should be going. I followed your link and It has taken me back here, I'm confused.

That's odd. Try this link:
http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bbf275c/
Click InDesign Windows or InDesign Macintosh. Then click Add Topic. You may need to log in first.

How do you turn off the thumbnail page number that is displayed
automatically when you print with the thumbnail function selected.

I don't think there's a way to do this. Please submit a feature request:

You may also want to pose this question in the user forum. Someone may have written a script that removes the thumbnail numbers:
