It turned it into a bottom border of the paragrah. Simply turn off the border. To turn off the border in Word 2003 and older, go to the Format menu > Borders and Shading > Borders tab. You should see a highlighted icon of a grid outline with a solid line at the bottom representing the bottom border. Just click on that icon to turn it off. In Word 2007, go to the Home tab, in the Paragrah section, the far right bottom corner is the border function. Click on the down triangle to open the menu and select "No Border".

Take your mouse over that line and the pointer changes to a "+" with four small arrows. Select it and press the delete button.
If you have inserted the line in the header or footer, then you go to the header or footer and then do the things listed above.
Hope that solves your problem.

click on the show/hide button to see all the non-printing characters. This button is just to the left of the zoom (percentage of page) box.
You should now be able to determine exactly where the line begins and ends to facilitate a delete. Cursor to the immediate left or above the line and press delete, or, cursor to the immediate right of the end of the line and press backspace.
