Question:
Why won't these Font Downloads work?

I went to the free fonts website "UltimateFonts.com" and downloaded 2 fonts, each time using the "Download" button at the top, then bottom of the page. They seemed to download onto my laptop, and I put them in the Windows/Fonts folder, and their properties list them as ".ttf" fonts or ".otf".
But they don't work!
One shows up in the font menu in Word 2010, but when I try to use it, the font immediately goes to Times New Roman.
HOW DO I get these fonts to download and WORK? PLEASE TRY OUT your solution BEFORE you tell it to me, rather than assume because it worked for one site, it'll work for all. I've seen that fail before! Any other info on successfully downloading and using free fonts would also be appreciated.
Also, if a font comes in as a Zip file, where can I find free software to Unzip it, which won't cause all sorts of problems with my laptop, or lock me into some sort of contract - knowingly or otherwise?

I don't understand, it works perfectly fine to me. First, it's "UltimateFonts.com" there is no space between it, impossible for a website to have a space within their domain name. Although, I understood what you meant. You may or may not know how to install the fonts so, I'll briefly explain it.

I got onto Ultimate Fonts, and follow the directions of the font, "S" and Page 9. I then click the Download link/button. It downloads it, with a ZIP archive. You can easily unzip it (extract to), and then you will see one file, called "Serpentine-Bold-Oblique" with an extension of, "True Type Font" otherwise known as "TTF." I would then double click on the file, and then click "Install." Wait, and then it'll work once you open Photoshop, Paint.NET, etc and look up the font.

If it still opens up Word when you double click, then it may be set into it. Right Click > Properties. Change the program into "Windows Font Viewer." Apparently, that program was installed onto my computer when I got mine. Make sure to click, "Apply" when you set the program to the right one.

If you haven't read the other answers, about a way to unzip it. I currently have it, it's free and no contract-binding. It's called WinRAR.

Fonts are installed to the fonts folder not copied. In Windows 7 right click on the font and choose Install. In Windows XP go to the Control Panel, click on Fonts, under the File menu click on install fonts, navigate to the fonts that you downloaded select the fonts and click OK.

This is a safe link where you can download winrar for free here http://bit.ly/1v2nWkq

You can use winrar to unzip zip files (or to open compressed folder). 7zip or winzip are other softwares you can use for the same purpose but winrar is by far the best one. All these programs work in a very similar way: you just have to right click the file to zip or unzip any folders or files.

If you don't want a trial version don't worry. The trial period of winrar never ends so you can use it for free with no limitations.

With WINRAR you will be able to open all the type of compressed folder like file .zip, .rar, .7z, .7zip .iso, .tar, .jar etc... that's the main reason why I recommend it.

Windows from XP on can handle zip files. just R click on it and select extract.

The fonts have to be installed using control panel/fonts before they can be used
