I know how to convert the file with re encoding, but it takes forever, sometimes days at a time for one file. And it has some quality loss which bugs me. But I know people have used a program called Perian to open MKV files with Quicktime and just click Save As....Unfortunately I'm operating on a Maverick iMac and Perian is no longer supported. Is there any alternative to this?

Handbrake is amazing....and that's just one of the features...ps, vary easy to use :-) pps, the method of saving as in quick time is just changing the extension not actually changing the file....movie.mkv done you way will say movie.mp4 but the actual file had not changed at all....it's still an mkv with an mp4 extension :-)
