Question:
How to determine the version of Office from the CD Key?

One of my users decided to turn off her Windows 7 Pro computer while it was finishing the installation of Service Pack 1. She said that she was tired of waiting for it to finish and just unplugged the computer to turn it off. Then she was surprised when it wouldn't boot this morning.

After trying a system restore (failed), and a system repair (failed), a reinstall from factory image (removed, thus failed), I reinstalled from a Windows 7 Pro disc that I had laying around. It activated just fine with the CD key on the case.

But the CD Key for Office isn't on the case. I used ProduKey to extract the CD Key from the Windows.old registry (which contains the crashed registry files).

Now I have the CD key for Microsoft Office, but no CD. I've downloaded several different versions of Office 2007 (Standard, Small Business User, Home & Business, and Ultimate) install discs, but none of them recognize the CD Key.

So, that brings me to my question. Does anybody know of a website (preferably connected to Microsoft) where I can enter my CD Key and it will tell me what version of Office I need to reinstall? ProduKey identified it as Office 2007 Standard. But I'm wondering if I need an OEM version of the CD/DVD or something else.

Anybody have any suggestions (besides buying Office 2013 Home & Business)?

Hi JimDandy,

Only with product key you might not be able to check which version you purchased with computer. Moreover from the symptoms above, it appears that the product key you found is not the correct one. If you still have the access of the Windows old image, you may try a different application to recover the product key. While researching online, I found a link which might be of some help. You may refer to link: http://bit.ly/Ghszj

Note: This application and steps above are neither tested nor recommended by Dell.

If the above step does not work, you may either get in touch with Microsoft to see if they can find some alternative or might need to purchase MS Office.

Hope this helps.

Thanks and Regards,

You could download the software and buy the key in Microsoft official site.

But I think the price is too expensive, more than $200. I found a MS partner online shop with low price about $50 after discounts.

I forget the Partner site, maybe you could Google.

Their service email is win8online# gmail.com

Hearing all the negative sentiments toward the Windows 8 OS made me really cautious in upgrading from Windows 7.

Finally, my Windows 7 became buggy enough that I decided it was time for me to go ahead and upgrade.

The days of reformatting my hard drive and reinstalling Windows OS (95, 98, XP...), when the computer started to act up, are over. I got the pro upgrade version....for a really great price on http://www.vip4sale.com

.

I purchased all my software from them. They are the best online store I ever buy.

Installation took a while, with lots of downloading and installing drivers, updates...etc.

When it was finally done, computer was running a lot faster, and all of the weird behaviors of previous installation were gone.

Now as far as using the new OS, it really wasn't that big of a deal. Yes, it's different from the previous Windows; but after 2 or 3 days, I've picked up so many cool features that I truly believe it's a superior OS compared to the previous Windows releases. Really.

The interface is quite convenient once you figure out how to use all the features and what happens when you move your cursor around the screen.

Oh, yeah, and I don't have a touchscreen. Although I'm certain that a touchscreen would definitely be a more effective way to navigate Windows 8, I really have no problems using just the mouse.

So, there you have it. I love this new OS.

i am a technician. the keys online you can search are not accepted by ms. they may not work after 3 months.

Someone recommended me this site http://www.windowspremiumkey.com

, and, truly speaking, the price attracted me at the first sight, but i am quite suspicious to the site.

then i asked some professional questions to their service team. i was satisfied with their reply.

i dicided to buy one. after careful test, the key they provided did work and support all the updates. it's trustable.

how can I find out if it's legit? can someone recommend a place with similar prices that you can vouch for?
