I can't open executable files (.exe) on windows 7.?

The message says, "Choose the program you want to open this file: adobe, word pad, notepad, INTERNET, paint, itunes, windows media player, windows media center, windows photo viewer or windows live photo gallery." I recently had a virus (win7 anti-spyware) and I think it deleted the capability to open executable files or hid it. I got rid of the virus already. I have two antivirius software programs (avast and superantispyware) and both say I have zero infections. I know Microsoft has a download that can fix this, but since I can't run executable files, I can't download it. Any help?
Oh, and can you explain the solution (if there is one) in the simplest terms possible? I'm not good with computer language...
Thanks!

The anti programs you have are junk, use these if you want to have it corrected!

YOU HAVE A VIRUS / MALWARE problem!

To combat this type of threat, please follow these instructions:

Turn the computer on, and boot into safe mode.

This is usually performed by depressing the F8 or F10 key during the boot-up process.

This is not a mandatory operation, but does provide extra protection while proceeding.

At the logon screen, log on to the computer.

Once you are at the desktop, go to the control panel and USERS.

** Here’s the trick! **

Create a new user account with administrator privileges.

Reboot computer and logon as the ‘new’ user account.

Download, install, update and run Anti-virus software and Anti-malware scanner, if available.

*** See links below for trial and free software to help combat this threat ***

After threat(s) are discovered, remove with pertinent software(s).

Utilize Windows Explorer or My Computer to access personal folder(s) & file(s).

Copy/move these folder(s) & file(s) to a safe location. example(s)… USB storage device, external drive.

FINISHED!

Congratulations, you have just combated a viral threat and won!

It sounds like your computer has lost specific files needed to open .exe i.e. the association with the files has been lost. I would recommend saving important files on a separate disk and reformatting your computer with the system CD. If you feeling tech savvy, you can go online and download the files or have someone do it for you.

Ok, you have a malware problem. (Bad Program)

Step 1. Backup all your files on an external hard disk. (Use Windows Backup)

Step 2. Use a windows 7 disc

Step 3. Reinstall windows to get it back

Step 4. Get files back from disk and install AVG@ free.avg.com
