If you are using Vista then you probably need to acquire Administrator Rights before you do it. If you're using XP then the quickest way is probably to re-install it, reboot and then uninstall it. Hopefully it will work this time!

Use a free tool called Revo uninstaller.Its an excellent program.Trying to uninstall avg manually is a bad idea

go to drive C: and the Program files and then find AVG 8 and delete after that try to uninstall it again

Not sure about AVG but some anti virus programs need to be stoped in services first.
Admin tools:
Services:
then stop AVG service

sometimes you can't uninstall if the program is running (an it won't shut down automatically)
Manually shutdown AVG and try again,
But, I think Bills answer is better - hence the thumbs up from me

Delete all AVG file and folder in PC. Clean registry too. Remove all startup service and aplication with Hijack This. Search and get here :

If you already have another version on your computer, remove it first. I had the same problem. It worked after removed my previous version.
