I just installed Ubuntu. I can't play any music or video. I've Googled like mad on how to get the codecs. I've tried pasting certain command lines in Terminal, but nothing gets installed or downloaded. I've tried using the Ubuntu Software Centre, but nothing gets downloaded - I tried installing VLC player for example, and all I get is "Failed to Download Repository Information". My internet's pretty fast, but I use a proxy. I changed the proxy settings through System > Preferences > Network Proxy. I input the proxy, also input a username and password (which is required for my proxy connection), and clicked on 'Apply system wide'. Even after that, I can't download a thing. No codecs, no software! Help! I can browse the net only after inputting proxy settings in Firefox. Otherwise, zilch! Please help!

You need to enable Restricted Extras for Multimedia playback

Open a Terminal and submit the following command:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Here is the Official Ubuntu Restricted Formats Documentation

You install files and programs for Linux using the software management program, may be called software center or synaptic. You user your user password. Once it is open you would use the search box and type in Ubuntu restricted and scroll the list until you find it and check the box and then click apply. This will install all the proprietary files that can't be automatically be installed, including the codecs. I just can not figure out why people always down load files and try to install them through the terminal command. If you don't know how these commands are used you will not get the software installed.

considering the undeniable fact that you're asking this question, i'm assuming your now no longer overly attentive to Linux. on situation that, i'd rule Fedora out; it demands better valuable training guide configuration installation customer-pleasant instructions like Flash, MP3 and DVD formats, heck, even Google's Chromium cyber internet browser isn't of their customer-pleasant repository. Ubuntu or Mint should be severe valuable for most novices; people have their personal opportunities. I say attempt both as stay CDs and %. the merely that clicks ideas-blowing with you.
