Just wondering why people would use the relatively primative IRC format rather than "modern" programs such as MSN etc

Here's MY problem with IRC: I can't get rid of the damned thing. I signed up SOLELY to play a trivia game with a Canadian friend, now IRC is constantly poised to hijack my browser.

I can't/don't find IRC in my add/remove programs, nor can I find IRC anywhere to remove them PERMANENTLY. HELP! PLEASE.

I don't know what difference it makes in the grand scheme of things, but IRC is an Israeli site. As much as I respect the technological savvy of the Israelis, IRC, at least for me, is a FRANKENSTEIN.

IRC is just way more powerful and msn is a bit inconvenient because you have to have everyone you want to talk to added on your contacts list whereas irc can be more of an open forum for people to talk. The two don't really compare.

IRC is anything but primitive.

There are hundreds of clients, from text based to complex gui programs. IRC chatrooms run 24/7 in most cases, and are easier to join (like #channel on irc.rizon.net).

There's no need to log in on most servers, so it's available to everyone (MSN, AIM, and Yahoo require registration). You can register a nick, but only if you want to. There's also no need to be "friends"

IRC supports bots, and varying levels of administrators (Admin, Ops, half-ops, general users, etc).

Wake me up when I can do "/xdcc get user (package number)" or !list or !rules in a IM chatroom.

IRC is great, you can chat with however many people you want.

EDIT: also, you don't have to add everybody you're talking to as contacts...

Some people enjoy simple things.

They don't want to see ads, games, news, mail, helper programs, popups, address books, games, emotes, phonecalls, voice chat, webcams.. goes on and on.

Get the picture? :)
