I downloaded and installed SQL server 2008 on my Windows 7 Home Premium. If I download Management Studio it says it won't work and I should re-install Serer 2008. Inside Server 2008 I can't install Management Studio. I've tried starting over and uninstalling everything but nothing seems to work. I managed to download an older version of Management Studio (2005) but that has it's downfalls.

I have been able to get SQL Server Express studio to connect to SQL 2008. It doesn't have migration tools or job creation or workflows, but at least I can see tables and write queries.

See if you can install SSMS (sql server mgt studio) 2008 R2. There are certain combinations of versions of visual studio and sql server 2008 that prevent ssms from installing correctly.

Do a search on the microsoft knowledge base wit terms such as can not install sql server mgt studio 2008. i have see several articles abouit this.
