A few years ago, I had a friend. He has a mac computer, and I had a windows XP computer.

He had me download a remote access program. I think he began with an S or was S something...but even tho he had a mac and everything, he was able to access into my computer, move files, and look through my stuff.

I want to use this tool to fix a friends computer from afar; like downloading programs for him to keep his computer cleaned up.

However I forgot the name of the program; but is it still possible now even with me running vista and my friend running XP?

You mean Windows Remote Assistance?

You can access it on vista from Start > Help and Support > Windows Remote Assistance

You can access it on xp from Start> Programs> Accessories> System Tools

And Yes, It will still work if your friend has xp and you have vista

The only remote access programs beginning with S off the top of my head are Sub7 and SSH. Neither are going to be very useful for you. Like other have said, the built-in Windows feature could work. Also try some version of VNC (RealVNC is my preference http://www.realvnc.com/)

Get your mate to send you a remote assistance request.

This can be done via windows messenger or outlook.

You both have to be logged onto windows messenger at the time, and your firewall must accept this request.

port 3389 must be listening and open on the remote machine.
