with vmware you can install virtual os in your system without making or deleting any partition.the os will be installed on a virtual hard disk partition which will be saved on your real hard drive as a file.just google it.

vmware is a virtual machine program that allows multiple operating systems to install and run on your main (host) os. It uses virtual technology which allows you to allocate hadd, memory, and other system resources to run another operating system and save it in a vm settings file on your computer. you don't have to partition hdd (or any other for that mattter) as this is all virtually done in the program and saved as a file on your host machine. Delete the OS you set up and all of your memory reserves, hdd reserve settings are deleted as well. When a VM is not running, none of your resources are being taken either.

I use Virtual Box, free from:

FYI: There's no need to partition your hard drive, period. Virtual box is a program that you install inside Windows. Then, you can install, and run, any OS that you want inside Virtual Box, which is running inside your Factory pre-installed version of Windows.

TIP: Within Virtual Box, you will need a legal copy of Windows, and, an un-used Activation Code, or, a free Linux Distro, burned to a DVD or CD, for example.

vmware essentially is virtual computer, you can run other operating system on it, for example you have Windows as your host operating system, you can install wmvare player (free), create virtual machine and install for example Linux on it and vice versa. You do not need to format your drive or change partitions, virtual machines are stored in files on your computer.

There are some Virtual Appliances (preinstalled virtual machines) you can buy or download for free, for various purposes, and you do not need separate machine for it to run.

One example I've used backtrack linux VM numerous times, to "check" WEP encrypted Wi-Fi network security.
