When you save your document, you have to change the format.

Go to "save" and underneath where you type in the name of the document, you will see a drop down menu.

Change the format to "Word" or to a text file.

I had the same trouble.

Works and Word are not compatible. However, I believe you can save Works documents as Word. If not, you will have to get something that IS compatible with Word. Works is a cheap knockoff of Word that Microsoft came up with and frankly, it stinks. You'd be much better off uninstalling it and getting OpenOffice, a free office suite that has everything Office does. You can save documents as Word documents and they can be opened on your school computers.

A note to whoever told her to just add something to the computer with Word. Yes, Microsoft has a universal translator, but that's a SCHOOL COMPUTER. She can't go around adding stuff just because she wants to.

This step-by-step article describes how to prepare a document in MS Works 6.0, 7.0, 8.0 or 9.0 so you can open it in Microsoft Word.

( Base source = http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315757/en-us - Modified for space and readability )

Two methods are available:

A) One to use if you have Microsoft Works installed on your computer.

B) One to use if you don't.

In your case, it is method A (unless your MS Works is older than 6.0)

In this method, to create or convert a Works 6.0, 7.0, 8.0 or 9.0 document so that you can open it directly in Word, save the document as a Word document.

To do this, follow these steps:

In Works, create or open the document that you want to be able to open in Word and then click File and then click Save As.

In the Save As dialog box, follow these steps:

Change the Save in box to the location where you want to save the Word-format version of your document.

In the File name box, type a new name (if one is required) for the Word version of your document.

In the Save as type box, select Word 97-2000 & 6.0/95 - RTF (*.doc), and then click Save.

NOTE: If you are using Works 8.0, select Word 97-2003 (*.doc) in the Save as type box, and then click Save.

There you have it !

OR, easiest method, if available, - install Microsoft Works on the schools computer. ;-)

on the computer with word: go to microsoft.com's update page, and get the universal file translator and install it. that will allow it to read most, if not all, files.

on the computer with works: when you save a file, save it in .doc format.

also, on the computer with word, you can "see" other files by selecting it when you click "open files." move the drop down box to ".wks".
