I want this to program on, I use it on the Linux machines at school but I'm trying to install it here on my Windows XP machine.

Here's the site:
http://www.gnome.org/projects/gedit/

It's a free download, it downloads as a .gz file, I extracted that with 7-Zip and then it turned it into a .tar file, which I extracted again, then I got this folder with a whole bunch of stuff in it, but I can't find where to launch the program itself! Help!

You can install Gedit on Windows, but it'll be a slight pain. You'll have to install Cygwin or Mingw and compile Gedit from source for it too install. Check out their documentations to go about the procedure.

Cigwin --> http://cygwin.com/

Mingw --> http://www.mingw.org/

Hi. As far as I can tell, GEdit is a Unix-like only program, meaning that it will work with Linux but not compatible with OS like Windows XP or Vista.

You might want to check http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2007/PL2007TEXT.php for a list of good text editors for Windows.

Hope this helps!

GEdit runs on Linux ONLY, if you happens to see a download tar application file (.gz, .bz2, etc) most likely it is for Linux. Usually, you wud always find the following files when you untar it; 1) configure and 2) makefile.
