I like Fedora 9, Linux Mint and Mandriva.
Fedora is cutting edge with the latest software and more recent kernel.
Linux Mint is based off Ubuntu but is more generous about non-free software. Includes multimedia codecs in the default installation.
Mandriva has a lot of proprietary drivers included in the CD so you get desktop effects right in the Live CD.
If you are just starting out with Linux I would suggest Mint but the choice is yours.

Yeah, Ubuntu. I like how it boots fast to desktop and shutdown quick. Stable, a software can crash yet the OS doesn't lock down. Rock-solid namespace -- I can cruise the web while a video gets crunched. I like to think the Ubuntu 64-bit offers the most software packages available for my AMD cpu.
Funny. After I download. I have to scan files, looking for .exe before I give a zipped folder to a Windoze user.
Each Ubuntu has its quirks. Mostly, each upgrade has been offering a larger selection of pre-built software along with the OS enhancements. I'm sticking with Gutsy Gibbon version because I use a 64-bit video program called Cinelerra which got fouled up with the latest Ubuntu release.

i have been using suse & fedora for a while now. used to have red-hat many years back. they are all great. my reasons:
1. open source - you have "total control" almost everything from the kernel, os and even applicaton layers.
2. linux is the best when it comes to learning more about computers and programming and how your os actually run. you are able to view source codes even edit them if you know how to.
3. it is flexible when it comes to gui interface, you can even program one yourself.
4. far stable and less virus attacks. more secure.
5. a lot of community support in linux. you can always ask around and get an answer quick.
6. can create your own robots using linux architecture =]
6. nasa is using linux =]
and many many more....

I'm an Ubuntu kid (and I've used SLED, OpenSUSE, Red Hat, Debian, Slackware, DSL, PuppyLinux, and Gentoo) and I like it for a few reasons.
1. It's easy. Point and click, dude.
2. It's got the softwares. You can always find a package for it... and if you can't, just use the Debian one.
3. It's widely used, so there is a TON of forum help, if you do run into anything.

LinuxMint 5.0 Main.
Ease of installation on my older Windows 98 machine (2000 vintage hardware)
Appearance is very similar to XP (imho) Made the transition a lot easier.
Finding add-on software online was easy by searching the Mint website (software portal)
Have not had a software problem (ie: crash, lockup or complete corruption)
Virus-free (so far)
Very user friendly.

Ubuntu
Free (meaning, non-proprietary, not selfish, straightforward); popular (meaning, widespread community of support available); simple and well-coded (meaning, efficient, not memory-intensive)
