Blue screen of death while trying to install Windows XP - help!?

Question

I just got this really old pc that needed a OS re-install badly because of viruses, and I've been trying to re-install Windows XP SP2 but as the install is about to begin, the blue screen of death appears and disrupts the whole process! Now I know the computer is full of viruses (it can still boot normally though) so could this be the problem? Would formatting the OS drive (Drive C) before booting the Win XP install disc help? The computer is already running Windows XP, and I'd much prefer Windows 7, but the computer has just 1 GB of RAM and more importantly, only 10 GB of space on the Drive C partition! Moreover, Drive C is WAY low on space with less than 100MB of free space. So I'm thinking should I format drive C first (Say using Hiren's Boot CD to do that) then try and install Windows XP because I think it's the viruses spoiling the install process. Is that the right thing to do? What are my other options? Please help guys! (and girls!) :-o

i got that screen before... your going to have to re install windows again.

That BSOD could be a sign of a failing RAM, not due to lack of space as the initial process of the install uses the RAM to run the XP installer program. In fact, you don't even need to have a formatted hard drive before you install an OS. The OS will do it for you if necessary. Try doing some memory and hard disk diagnostics using the Hiren's BootCD. Meanwhile, there's nothing wrong if you format the hard drive with the Mini Windows XP if you can. You will be installing a new OS anyway.
