It is almost like Microsoft Office. It's better because it's FREE. However, don't expect documents, presentations, worksheets to work with someones Microsoft Office software. There are no guarantees; some people say it is completely compatible but others come here saying they can't view things at work that they created with Open Office at home.
If it's for your personal use, then it's better than Microsoft. If your professional career depends on creating work that is 100% compatible with Microsoft Office, then I'd be leery.

OpenOffice.org is absolutely fantastic! It's faster and free. And it's also capable of opening and saving Microsoft Office formats almost perfectly.
Definitely give it a try. It can do nearly everything Microsoft's suite does.

OpenOffice.org is simply awesome!
I was using Ms-Office for long, I tried OpenOffice and found it much much better than Ms-Office, not just because it is free, but it gives you much more options than Ms-Office.!!
like, one click pdf-convert, can save files in .doc, .xls etc. format.
And you can do more with your OpenOffice by installing additional add-ons.
