Question:
Is it possible to merge only the parts of 2 or more layers that overlap each other in Photoshop or Illustrator?

I have layered a semi-transparent pattern over a photograph and would like to delete those parts of the photograph that are not visible 'through' the pattern.
The pattern is not one solid shape but comprises many separate elements that have been flattened into one layer, so using the magnetic lasso to cut the pattern shape out of the photograph would take hours.

I wondered whether merging the sections that overlap each other would allow me to erase the portions of the photo that do not overlap.
Any other suggestions if this is not possible?

Thanks for any help.

If the pattern is flattened but still has a transparent background, all you need to do is use a clipping mask between the image layer and the pattern layer. This is for Photoshop, I don't know about Illustrator. Put the image layer on top of the pattern layer, then click right between the two layers holding down the ALT/OPT keys. You'll see the cursor change.

If the pattern layer is flattened but with a background, then you'll have to post the image so we can offer you the best, quickest approach to get the results you want.

I'm not sure if it's the same for all versions of photoshop, but you can use the Magic Wand on the semi-transparent layer to select all of the pattern.

Then go to the image layer. The same parts will be outlined and you can just use the eraser to remove the parts under the pattern.

Hope this helps :)

Genesis a million is the account of the creation of the universe and existence on planet earth because it exceeded off in chronological series. Genesis 2 is merely an extra suitable rationalization of the activities that exceeded off on the tip of the 6th creation day - while God created human beings. Genesis one can provide quite much no info on the subject of the creation of human beings (different than the thought that human beings have been created in a twin of God). For a e book it fairly is dedicated to the dating between human beings and God, 4 verses feels like a touch unfavorable rationalization for the creation of God's preeminent creature. it is because of the fact Genesis one replace into on no account meant to stand apart from Genesis 2 and 3. Genesis 2 describes God's training of a particular area in the international (Eden) for habitation by utilising the 1st human beings. area of the confusion outcomes from our English translations, which use the term "earth" while the Hebrew could extra suitable be translated "land."

Use the eraser / pen tool / magic wand.
