my system was affected by a virus called auto.exe. it disabled my registry, taskmanager and cmd. i used many AV's including Norton 2008 but invain. later on the virus is removed by Quick heal. it also made a registry check and reverted the registry keys so that my taskmanager is now working. but still cmd is not working. its saying that its unable to find the path specified. but actually the file is still residing in my system 32 folder. platform: win xp(sp2)

Command prompt is not a program or DOS to reinstall..

It is just a shell. U can only "Repair" it Not reinstall it

If u have installation CD of your OS... then just put the Cd and it asks for repairing..

Check it writes the AUTOEXEC.NT file and cmd.exe file again

do it or else

ask one of your friends that have the same operating system that you have and just ask them to send you their files.

a simple way to get to it is to make a batch file

just go to notepad and write in it

command.com

and save it as anything.bat

making note to save it with the extension ".bat"

just open the file and it will get you to a command prompt.

Also dont get confused with autoexec.ini as its a system file not a virus.

i hope this helped as i doubt it did.

Do a system search for CMD.exe. XP does have a system file protection system, but if it overwrote the original copy and your copy in c:\winnt\system32, you might be toast. Check in c:\winnt\system32\dllcache

Try running in safe mode. At this point it may be time to burn important media to cd or dvd and start over....
