Overall a Linux based platform can perform most of the tasks equally as well as a proprietary platform using OSS. Linux does have its limitations with some applications and in particular gaming

Ubuntu is just about the worst Linux distro. available these days. Canonical who produce Ubuntu have become arrogant and ignored users needs however well voiced across the many Forums that make reference to Ubuntu. For example Ubuntu 11.10 doesn't offer the classic GNOME Desktop and it doesn't include the Synaptic Package Manager despite the fact many users did not want these changes. I used to have much time for Ubuntu starting with Ubuntu 6.10 finishing with the last decent release which was Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint Debian Edition Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled (including multimedia codecs)

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint Debian Edition then you need to create a Bootable LiveDVD

Linux Mint Debian Edition can also be run straight from the LiveDVD from Boot without touching your Hard Drive

i could advise employing XP , purely evaluate this the drivers available by employing the hardware manufacture is much greater while in comparison with Win7, and the p.c. or the style of enterprise laptop continues to be WinXP. I understand your case being a regulation scholar you could desire to maintain an excellent style of preformatted workplace papers. Which employing workplace 2003 will justify, instead of employing win7 that has workplace 2007 making employing workplace complicated. in spite of the undeniable fact that i too could desire to attempt Ubuntu eleven.04 in my 2d partition and that i've got a MTS plugin, which Ubuntu eleven fails to know peiod. yet libre workplace has one solid factor it may examine HINDI fonts rfile record which workplace 2007 even fails to examine. follow XP you're no longer behindanything, in case you could have the budgetwitch to Win 7 abode top classification instead of Starters. abode top classification has the alternative of upgrading to WIn 7 maximum suitable, by employing giving a valid key, i'm able to help you in that, provided you have abode top classification.

Only convert to Ubuntu if you're absolutely sure you know your way around the OS...It all depends on what you're planning on doing within the OS...If you want to play games, don't do it...
