I need to work on many design softwares such a s 3Ds Max, SolidWorks, Rhino, Photoshop, CorelDraw etc. on my Dell Laptop. Will installing windows vista be of any problem to my requirements? or shall I install xp itself?

Do NOT use vista. XP is a good and stable version of windows. Vista has been riddled with problems, is very taxing on your system and slow. There is a reason windows 7 came out such a short time after vista.... cause vista stinks. If you can you might get windows 7 if not, go with XP.
