how do i create my own word shortcuts on Microsoft Words 2003?

A friend used to be able to create two rows worth of shortcut tool bars that lies underneath the original tool bar of microsoft words 2003. It was designed so we wouldn't have to type something long repetitively. He would make shortcut word buttons like it would say "D1WC4" in a click of a button turn, it would turn into "D-1 Alley Women's Restroom Code-4" all typed out for us. Anyone knows what I'm talking about?

Yes it can be done using the ‘Auto Text’ option. First you will need to add the full text to the ‘Auto Text’ list. Do this by clicking on the ‘Tools’ menu and choosing ‘AutoCorrect Option’s and then bring the ‘AutoText’ tab to the front. Enter the full text of something you want to assign to a button where it says ‘Enter AutoText entries here’ and click ‘Add’.

Turn on your ‘AutoText’ toolbar by clicking on ‘View’ –‘Toolbar’s - ‘Auto Text’.

Now, to assign a button to your text, click on the ‘Tools’ menu and choose ‘Customize’. Bring the ‘Commands’ tab to the front and scroll the ‘Categories’ list until you come to ‘Auto Text’ and click on it. Scroll through the ‘Commands’ list on the right to find the entry you added. Click and drag this entry to the ‘Auto Text’ toolbar – to the right of ‘New’. Click on the ‘Modify Selection’ button and enter an abbreviation for this entry at ‘Name’.

You can also choose to add an image, instead of the abbreviation, to your new button at the ‘Modify Selection’ stage by clicking on ‘Change Button Image’ and taking one of the pre-made images or click on ‘Edit Button Image’ if you want to create your own. To have only the image showing on the button click ‘Default Style’. Now click ‘Close’ and your new button should be ready for action.

Sounds like he made some macros.

Read up on creating macros in your help file in Word

You could also use Auto Correct. Check that out also. With that you would just type D1WC4 and it would correct to what you want.
