I am building a GAMING pc... And I was told that in order to get good use out of my Memory, (8g), and to get good use out of all four cores on the i7... that I would have to buy windows 7 ultimate... I was also told that I could run Linux ubuntu beryl.. with wine, and that it would be a better OS to do get function out of the system, but that I might not be able to play games on it..

Important thing to me is running games, and movies, and getting the best results possible..

What do I need to do as far as operating systems?

The other people are right that you need Windows for the majority of the games. Don't get Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit unless you want bitlocker and more languages. You'd otherwise be fine with Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. You can still get XP mode for old programs in Windows 7 Pro.

All the games that you're building that PC for are developed for Windows operating systems, so it's really not an option. Yes, you can run some Windows programs with Wine but even for desktop applications, there are stability and performance issues. If you run games on Wine, and even if they work, the results would be horrible.

So my advice would be installing and 64-Bit Windows 7 operating system. 32-Bit operating systems can't use more than 3GB RAM.

first off i have BOTH on my pc and I love it. Ubuntu is good for gaming but some stuff you need windows to use no matter what. Ubuntu is a very nice gaming OS but you still need windows for some games.
