windows messenger and windows live messenger are kind of the same but windows live messenger has been upgraded from msn.. the difference between windows live messenger and windows messenger is that windows live messenger is basically a more advanced program than windows messenger, some things that are improved are simply things like background pictures, nudges, games and so on... if you want to find out more then click the tour guide link below:

Windows Messenger basically means MSN 4.1. You can talk to anyone who has a .net passport.
Windows Live Messenger requires an email account from MSN or Hotmail, and you can talk to anyone who has a .net passport as well. Windows Live Messenger is at version 8.1
For a faster and lighter MSN experience, choose 4.1. For a messenger service that has more flash and fun, choose 8.1
