Question:
Something's bugging me about the Mac vs PC thing?

I just finished building a i7 machine. All the latest hardware, fast and powerful.
I am running XP and it's the last thing to be upgraded.
I edit videos and I really like the look of Final Cut software but it says it's for Mac only.
So my question is this, and I think it's a reasonable one.
What exactly makes a Mac a Mac and non Mac a non Mac? Is it the operating system or is it hardware?
Can I make my machine a Mac and install Final Cut?

It's got to be both hard- and software of equal importance, but I still don't know what makes people go for Macs. As far as I can see, the graphics are superior to PC (so, good where this is important. e.g. printing and design, professional photography, etc.) but beyond that I get the impression it's a matter of style, fashion and kudos (expense) rather than the practicality of a PC.

The Mac was always intended as a hardware/software combination. Apple controls what goes into each Macintosh and there are advantages to that. Hackintoshes were tolerated as long as the computers were homebrew but with the switch to intel architecture a lot of people have been throwing it on any PC. PCs are commodity computers so I don't really like the idea of running Mac OS X on PCs -- there is FreeBSD after all (OS X is a BSD OS). If you want to rebuild it into a Mac go ahead but if you want to work on the machine you've built you might consider installing FreeBSD or AVLinux next to your XP OS and looking at OpenShot Cinelarra and KDEEnlive which run on free OSes.

A Mac is defined by the operating system but it is also the hardware because it is very rare that someone uses MAC OS X on a PC (Windows computer).

Windows can easily be installed on a Mac but MAC OS X cannot easily be installed on a PC. However it can be done and it is called a Hackintosh.
