Question:
Windows updated and restarted my computer without asking me?

I was just browsing around on the internet and all of a sudden my computer started to shut down and start updating. It restarted fine. There was no warning saying it was going to do this and none of my Windows alerts are turned off. I am running Windows 7. Anyone know why this would've happened? Nothing seems to be out of place or anything, but it did annoy me by not telling me it was even downloading the updates and by restarting on me without asking.

In the Start Menu go to Run type “gpedit.msc” and press Enter

Now a Group Policy editor will open. In this window navigate to: Computer Configuration -> Administrative Template -> Windows Components -> Windows Update

Double click on No auto-restart for scheduled Automatic Updates installations

In the settings window Choose Enabled and click OK

Close Group Policy Editor

There are two settings that may be set wrong. Here's how I'd fix it in Windows Vista:

1. Click the Windows Button -> Control Panel.

2. Click Security.

3. Click Turn Automatic Updating on or off.

4. Set the Important Updates list box to your choice.

5. Set the Install New Updates at listboxes as you want them.

6. While you're here, you might want to also check the Microsoft Update checkbox for non-Windows updates and any other checkboxes.

7. Click OK.

Hope that helps.

Depending upon how your alerts are set up, the computer will restart after it installs certain updates.
