A beta means it's not the final version yet. It might have some problems that haven't been fixed yet. You can keep the beta then download the final version when it comes out.

Alpha software is generally very buggy, and still undergoing massive changes. When it stabilizes, it can become beta software which is fairly stable and being fine tuned.
Beta software is still in testing, but is usable. A lot of people try beta software because it has new features that they will get familiar with first, or perhaps they have a need for it now and don't mind using beta versions if it means they don't have to wait until the final release, which could be months away.
Public beta trials allow developers to gather bug reports and information from many more users, which helps them clear up any major outstanding issues faster, shortening the time before the product can be released as a live version.
The (unkind) joke in the industry about crappy software is that we pay to 'beta test' a company's software because the versions they sell in the store are still so bug ridden.
Windows ME is an example of a massive public beta test :/

Well, there's various types of BETA
Closed BETA is where a company hire normal people to test their product before the program is released to the public, this way it increases the chances of bugs being fould before launch.
Testers are usually just normal people who apply to test the program, and usually aren't payed, their job is to report any bugs and make suggestions.
Open BETA is when the program is released to the public, allthough it still isn't the completed version, there may still be bugs in the program etc...

Beta means that the program isn't the final product. It means there still may be bugs in it, and shouldn't be used on machines in which the software has to work properly 100% of the time.

BETA (from a Greek letter) is a level of volatility(=potential that the value is going up and down lots; volatility is frequently undesirable). A beta of greater beneficial than one potential that the inventory is greater volatile than the industry as an entire (as an occasion, the S&P 500 index), and a beta of decrease than one the alternative.

The word "beta" is often used to describe a project or process that is being tested. This new feature of the college web site is currently in the final stages of development and testing. It's been made available to you now so that we can gather your feedback to make it as useful and as complete as possible. We'll be adding more information and additional features before it becomes final.

Beta is software terminology for "new and untested". The company believes it will work but is giving you the opportunity to find out. Using Beta software for work is not advised, but for regular household use don't be afraid. It's usually just a little quirky,

Beta software is software that hasn't been completed yet. It is still in the testing stages and there may be bugs still to be fixed. Using beta software when you have no real need to (i.e. if you're not a developer) is a little risky as one of these bugs may cause serious harm to your computer.
