Wine works... sometimes. Check on http://www.winehq.com and select AppDB to see other peoples results with programs. Not all programs are there, but it gives you an idea. For better results, try crosssover ( http://www.codeweavers.com ). That's a for-pay version with a lot of tweaking, but well worth it.
Bottom line is, download and build the latest wine and test it out. You may be thrilled with the results. I have run many windows programs, including many games, with regular Wine. Each version of wine gets better.
ps - porting is rewriting a prog to work with a different os. Not quite the same as running on different os. Wine can be useful for that too. As an "Old Phart", I had to toss that in.

You can try running your compiled programs with Wine. Your results can vary in porting your programs to Linux. Anything written in C or C++ (if text or compatible GUI toolset), Perl, Python, Java or Ruby should be fairly easy If there wasn't anything Windows specific coded in. If you wrote your programs with the .net framework, there is good chance that you could port it with Mono without too much trouble. If you used a API or widget set that wasn't cross platform, you would have rewrite the incompatible sections for Linux. GTK+ and wxWidgets are a couple of cross-platform GUI toolkits.

Work? Usually. Work well? Depends. At the moment, the WINE team is dedicated to improving compatability, rather than optimizing performance, so your mileage may vary. That said, I've had good experiences with WINE on the whole, even playing games through STEAM. You might want to look up compatability lists, and look for issues involving combinations of WINE with the particular applications you are using.
