I actually work on computers and actually cleaned one the other day. This is going to be along explanation, not to long, but a little long. Please read it!

Okay, first of all. Open your internet browser (either Internet Explorer or Firefox) and click on "Tools" which should be on the top bar or (if you have the newest version of Internet Explorer) on the right side. Click on "Internet Options". Then delete your "Browsing History", "Cookies", "Temporary Internet Files", "Passwords", etc.

Second, what type of virus protection software do you have? McAfee and Norton Anti-Virus are horrible! They are the devils of the computer world. CA is an okay program, but pretty expensive. A great program (that is also free!) recommended by many computer programmers that doesn't lag your computer is AVG Free. Website: http://free.grisoft.com/ Install that and uninstall what ever virus protection you have. It scans your computer automatically, you just set the time it scans it. But it also protects, 24/7.

Third, virus protectors DO NOT block spy bots. You probably don't have a spybot scanner, if you do uninstall it. A safe program that is also free is Spybot Search & Destroy. Website: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html Download and install that. Scan your computer with it once a week. Only takes about 15 minutes to scan.

Fourth, bug and error scanners and fixers. You also probably don't have one of these, which will really clean your computer. I also know another safe program that is free, its called ADAware SE-Personal. Website: http://www.lavasoft.de/ Download and install this, also scan your computer with this once a week. Spybot and ADAware can scan at the same time.

I had a friend whose computer was running super super slow! Took about 5 minutes to open a page and he had DSL. I used all these programs, did all these steps and pages loaded up in 1 second or less. He was shocked! Hope this helps you! Peace!

http://cookiemanage.diaryland.com

Temp File:

using Disk Clean, you can emtpty these files in both XP & Vista

I reccomend deleting your pre-fetch files at least weekly.

these are files that are copied to your temp folder anytime you open/use anything.

wordpad,email,websites,ect.

this is set up so your computer can find the software, application or website faster

but...in order to get the newest version of any website using this "cached" method

you need to refresh the page

in my opinion, this is counter-productive and wastes my time!

delete those files weekly

XP & Vista:

start

my computer [ Vista is just computer ]

local disk drive [c]

Vista may be o.s. [c]

windows

temp

click file

click select all

press delete key on keyboard

no ! BUT....you CAN delete their UNINSTALL files that just hog space!

start [ or press windows key + letter R ]

enter explorer

tools

options

view

click show hidden files/folders

uninstall files that begin AND end in $ AND contain text--UNINSTALL

Try downloading and using a program like Ad-Aware that will help remove tracking cookies and other internet "clutter" that gets saved (without your permission) on your computer.

Also, make sure you are using a good preventative anti-spyware, virus protection, firewall program like symantec norton antivirus or McAffee.

A clean computer is key to a faster computer. Run the 3 scans below.

Run a virus scan weekly.

Update and run your Anti-Virus program. Don't have one? You can run a free online scan from CA.

http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virus...

Run Spybot and SuperAntiSpyware weekly.

Download, update and run Spybot---http://www.safer-networking.org/...... . Don't forget to use the Immunize feature.

Download, update and run SuperAntiSpyware---http://www.snapfiles.com/get/SuperAntiSpyware.html

Now to prevent spyware from being installed in the first place....

Download SpywareBlaster---http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html...

SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.

It's main features include:

- Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.

- Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.

- Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.

Now lets clean up your registry.

Run RegScrubXP weekly. Run Cleanup every time you log off.

Download RegScrubXP--http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?d...

Safely cleans junk out of the Windows 2000/XP system registry. All changes made to the registry are fully restorable to it's original condition. You can make an exclusion list of registry entries that RegScrubXP will not display as problems. You can sift through a list of file extensions, company names, run upon startup programs, Internet Explorer history, and uninstall programs to delete what you think is junk.

Download CleanUp---http://www.stevengould.org/software/clea...

Free disk space, make your computer run better/faster and protect your privacy - all in one easy solution. All for free!

Now lets clean up your disk.

Run a Disk Cleanup 2 times a month. Run Disk Defrag. monthly.

Do a Disk Cleanup and Disk Defrag. You can find both of them by following the path below.

Start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Cleanup. Let it do its thing. You can check every box that has something to delete.

Now follow the same path and do a Disk Defrag. Again just let it do its thing.

Now lets tweak your connection.

If your speed is good I would not mess with it by trying to tweak it. If you do tweak once it is done you should not have to do it every again.

There are many programs out there to do this. I will give you 2 of them.

The first one is TCP Optimizer.

Description: The TCP Optimizer is a free, easy Windows program that provides an intuitive interface for tuning and optimizing your Internet connection. There is no installation required, just download and run.

http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php....

You can get support for the best way to set it up right from their forum http://forums.speedguide.net/

The second one is Cablenut.

Windows XP tested and approved

CableNut is a tool for optimizing your Internet Connection. We have provided a way to tweak any option you may want to in the adjuster. You can load "CableNut Custom Setting" files that are included with the program to tweak your Internet connection.

http://www.cablenut.com/

Again support is available right from their forum.http://www.broadbandnuts.com/index.php?p...

All programs are FREE!

After applying the suggestions above you will have a clean and faster computer. Enjoy.

You could try defragging to make your computer more efficient and deleting unnecessary programs etc. Programs like WindowWasher are also good for clearing out unnecessary files.
