if you want to make a slideshow and can play well on regular dvd player ,maybe you can try RZ DVD Creator, now i am using it, works fine, it can make/burn DVD slideshows of lots of pictures, such as jpg, jpeg, gif, bmp, png, etc. to DVD, and it is easy to add background music for pictures, it can directly convert and burn any pictures or videos to stndard video DVD(DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL, etc),the burned dvd can be played well on home DVD player. You can yahoo or google search and download RZ DVD Creator, work well on my computer, easy to use, good quality, most functionality, hope it can help you with your problem!

If you don't have Microsoft Powerpoint, take Tate's advice and download Open Office from

http://www.openoffice.org

It's free and you get the equivalent of MS Word and Excel with it.

I downloaded it instead of paying for Microsoft Office for my laptop.
