1) what is your operating system

2) are you referring to internet speed or are you referring to general log in and operation of software on the computer (non-internet related activities). You can't speed up internet without a different ISP package.

3) did you recently install something just prior to it slowing down. If so, uninstall that item

4) when was the last time you ran your anti-virus and anti-malware software. Both of these can choke a computer

5) do you have a pirate copy of windows. This would explain everything.

6) if you have a legal copy of windows, when was the last time you installed windows updates. Patches help repair software breaks of which some affect computer speed.

Once you do the above then...

1) what do you have in start up? Delete unnecessary programs

2) are you seeing sluggishness when you have a ton of programs open at the same time?

3) run diskcleanup

4) run defrag

5) run the assessment tool on your computer. If it's less than 3 you might be due a new computer

6) get rid of unnecessary junk programs on your computer

Depends how old your computer is. It like a Car. Don't expect it to perform at the top end after a few years. Hardware, software and drivers can all be old and even no longer supported, so no updates.

1. Think about moving to a Linux operating system such a Ubuntu. It uses less resources on your computer and will generally run faster.

2. How much CRAP do you have on your Hard drive? Think of it as a Library - the more books it has in it the longer it takes to find something. Remove all the old programmes you no longer use. Buy a Memory stick and move all your letters and photo's to it, then delete the copies on your computer.

3. Clean out and Defrag. Then check all the drivers for your computers bits are up to date. There are several free programmes out there that will help - FileHippo and Nivite are 2 that are good. Make sure your Graphics Card drivers are the most up to date. Read the other messages on here. Some are good, some not so.

I have done several upgrades to my older laptop, so I think I have earned the right to toss my two cents' worth in. Hardware-wise, changing out your hard drive for a solid state drive is a waste of money, period. The only advantage of using a solid state drive is that it has no moving parts. However, I have found some simple changes that will visibly increase the speed of an aging computer:

.

1) Increase the amount of RAM. This was the easiest and most dramatic improvement. For about $35.00 I doubled the memory from 1GB to 2GB and immediately there was a distinct speed-up.

.

2) Upgrade to a faster operating system. My netbook came with Windows XP and it worked pretty good at the beginning, but as time passed and the apps and the Internet began to make greater demands on my computer's operating system, it slowed down. Upgrading to Windows 7 sped it back up.

.

3) Upgrade to the latest version of Internet Explorer. Under Windows XP, I had only been able to use IE 8, and it had slowed to a crawl. It got so bad, I couldn't do Facebook at all. Once I upgraded to Windows 7, I was then able to upgrade to IE 11, which is much faster. Using FB is the pleasure it once was again. Also, you might want to consider using a different browser, such as Google Chrome, which is much faster than IE--but there is one catch. Chrome captures your browsing history so they can put targeted ads on your screen. If that doesn't bother you, go ahead and consider using Chrome. Good luck!

Your Computer Is Running

Nowhere Near Its Full Potential!

The Windows Registry is like “engine” behind the Windows Operating System. Unfortunately as we use our computers more and more this engine gets full of clutter in the form of misplaced data, bad programs, or simply overload. This clutter slows down your computer and starts causing crashes and errors.

Most computer problems are a direct cause of a damaged Registry. For example, if you’ve experienced any of these problems listed below, your Registry needs help:

Slow Computer Performance

Slow Computer Start up

Computer crashes and you don't know why

Start up is not as fast as it use to be or it crashes on start up

Longer than usual loading times

Error messages popping up and programs not working

Every program you install, every little internet download, and even spyware that you’ve already deleted will change a small section of your system registry. Over time all these little changes will add up, causing your PC to run very slow!

But don’t worry, with the right Registry Cleaner this is an easy fix. A simple scan will find and repair all these problems resulting in performance that is comparable to a brand new computer!

Now, don’t just go out and buy the first registry cleaner you get your hands on. Not all these programs are the same. In fact, some of these programs are downright SCAMS that pretend to fix your Registry but actually install pop-ups and advertising programs on your computer!

6. Run "Error Checking" on all hard drives

7. Run "De-fragment" on all hard drives

8. Install anti-virus software and keep it current

9. Install an Ad Blocker; it not only blocks malicious websites, but also reduces temp disk space usage for the browser by about 30% by not downloading advertising

10. Find and Delete Temporary Files

11. Set your computer's energy settings to High Performance

Scientists have done a lot of research on speeding up computers. They know that electricity flows faster through conductors when they are cold. The colder the better.

They have taken computer processor chips and put them in a room that is several hundred degrees below zero F.

(In Science, they usually use the Kelvin scale. 0 K is absolute Zero, it is physically impossible to make anything any colder than that. All molecules stop moving at that temperature. When molecules move inside an object, even the slightest bit, it causes friction and heat. If the molecules stop moving completely, there is no heat at all. 0 K = −273.15 °C (−459.67 °F).

The colder they the processor is, the faster it runs.

They are now trying to invent a "Super Computer". This will be the fastest computer in the world. This idea of extremely cold processors is being studied by Scientists and computer manufacturers for use in the future super computer.

(Please don t get crazy and throw your computer in the freezer or anything like that now!)

Do not. I repeat, do not ever use any program that claims to speed up your computer. That will open up a world of hurt and eventually lead to a full system restore, because it will trash your operating system.

Here are some programs that will help, they're not all free. Adaware SE, Super Antispyware, Spybot Search and Destroy, System Mechanic. Make sure you have some sort of AntiVirus program installed, no matter what operating system you're running. There are hackers and coders out there, that make viruses for every platform.

Good Luck, hope this helped at least somewhat.

Often a sudden performance-degradation on your computer may be attributed to the last-installed software, or an update to your operating system or drivers. There are many other factors which can cause a steep or a gradual decrease in your computer performance.

Some conflicting software programs that loads at the startup

Multiple security programs

Recently installed software updates or drivers

Third-party browser plug-ins

Cluttered files over years

A lot of items loading at the startup

A virus infection

make sure you should fix all above mentioned threats. also don't keep your data on desktop

I would ignore all these answers and ask yourself, "what speed is fast enough for how I use this computer?" Speed is relative in terms of PC performance. Do you need speed for browsing, streaming, rendering, data entry, gaming, bit coin mining? After answering that question you can then ask the question, "what kind of response from my computer do I need for that particular use?" You can then isolate and upgrade software and hardware problems based on that answer. For example, if you do a lot of video streaming from the internet, you'll need a minimum amount of CPU processing, RAM, internet bandwidth (from the ISP, routher, network card), video graphics card memory, and the version of software that is going to be streaming the content.

The things that have been mentioned in earlier posts such as defragmentation, removing programs, and so forth aren't the biggest issues unless you have malware, viruses and the like.

You can:

1. Defrag Hardrive

2. If your CPU and/or Graphics Card can be overclocked, do it. But be cautious about the voltage you use and memory clock.

3. If you have AVG or Norton do a full scan for viruses, malware, etc...

4. DO NOT download any applications that claim to speed up your PC... You have been warned...

5. If you have Norton, then turn off CPU monitoring... I found this to cause a ton of my lag.

6. Go to task manager then click the startup tab and disable any unneeded processes that open when you start up the PC.

7. Go into your Control Panel then Add/Remove Programs. Delete any unneeded programs like toolbars etc...

8. Try run your PC in safe mode or performance mode.

9. Turn off smooth animations.

10. Make sure you don't have unneeded processes open in task manager. If you do then go into task manager, right click the application, open file location, and remove it manually. ONLY use on non-windows processes and if it doesn't open up to Windows files like system32 or any other necessary files.

Best upgrade for most people would be to use an SSD instead of a standard hard drive. For most people this makes the biggest difference, harddrives have been a bottleneck for quite a while and it speeds up just about everything (i.e. Boot times, opening files, running programs etc)

Also make sure you don't have anything like toolbars or malware installed on your system

Computers slow down over time because of all the shovelware installed by all your programs. Defragging the HD and deleting the TEMP files are temporary and minimal fixes.

Consider installing a 100% SSD hard drive (available on eBay) that is larger than the HD you have now. Do a clone of your existing HD onto the SSD (Acronis, no defrag necessary) and install it in your computer. Your Volkswagon computer will instantly turn into a Ferrari faster than any computer on display at BestBuy at a fraction of the price.

That's a very vague question and you're not giving us any information to work with. What sort of hardware do you have? What OS? What are you trying to do. If you want to speed up your pc, Just follow this tips.

1. Open Run command menu By win+R

2. Type "temp" and clean all folders and file from temp folder.

3. Then again Open Run command menu and type "%temp%" and delete all files from this folder.

4. Further Open Run command menu and type "prefetch" and delete all files from prefetch.

5. Clean your C: drive with "disk cleanup".

If still the pc slow... Then Delete all log files from "Windows event Log" folder. For deleting this files follow This Tips> Select "My computer" and then Click "Manage" and Then Click "Event Viewer" > Windows logs> Application> and then there you see on right site of the window "Clear Log" and clean all logs. This way clean security> setup> all logs from windows log.. (Just delete "Windows logs" sub files And do not delete another logs files or folders.

For more you can use : Wisecare software. This is very useful for pc junk files cleaner.

CPU? memory? Disk speed? Internet speed? What is it that is causing it to be slow?

keep clean your computer's operating system and use legal license of any software. Try to avoid portable software.

One way to do it is to transfer everything you need to save to an external drive, then reformat your computer, then bounce what you saved back to your C drive. Just make sure that before you transfer your software back to your drive you have updated it and cleaned it up.

Are you sure that you're getting the very best performance out of your PC? Whether you're running Windows Vista or Windows 7, try these tips to give your PC a little extra zip.

Limit how many programs run at startup

There are a lot of programs that load automatically when you boot up your PC—which can really hamper performance. To manage these programs like a pro, learn how to get a comprehensive view of what's running:

1. Click the Start button Picture of the Start button, type System Configuration in the search box, and then click System Configuration in the list of results.

2. Click the Startup tab. The programs set to run at startup are indicated with a check mark. You can clear the check boxes for any nonessential programs to disable them, but make sure you only disable programs you're familiar with. When in doubt, don't clear the check box.

Delete, delete, delete

A clean machine is a fast machine. That means your best option is to uninstall all the programs you don't use. Delete things like trial software, limited-edition versions, and anything else you're never going to use. Antivirus software? Just testing. You always want your security program, but make sure you're only running a single, up-to-date program. To uninstall software:

1. Click the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then click Control Panel.

2. Under Programs, click Uninstall a program.

3. Click the program you want to delete, and then click Uninstall.

Run fewer programs at the same time

If your PC bogs down while you're working, check to see how many programs you have running. All programs take up system memory, which can have a huge impact on performance. In some cases, having multiple instances of a program (such as several open email messages) or multiple versions of a program type (more than one antivirus program) can use up memory. Respond to and close your messages right away and keep open only the programs that are necessary for the work you're currently doing—and you'll see a boost in speed.

Make ReadyBoost your friend

It's all very well to advise you to close programs you're not using—but just because you're not using it now doesn't mean you won't be using it in 10 minutes. The answer is ReadyBoost, a helpful feature that can use the extra space on a flash card or USB storage device to speed up your PC. Plug in a compatible storage device and click Speed up my system when you see the AutoPlay dialog box.

Troubleshoot

1. If your PC was whizzing along merrily and then suddenly started lagging, run a virus scan. Clean bill of health? Try a troubleshooter:

2. Click the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then click Control Panel.

In the search box, type Troubleshooting, and then click Troubleshooting in the list of results.

3. Under Systems and Security, click Check for performance issues.

4. Run the Performance troubleshooter by clicking Next in the lower-right corner.

Clean your hard drive

The more you use your PC, the more programs you use and the more services you're running. Closing a program doesn't always close the service. That's why restarting fixes so many problems; it clears out the memory.

You should also make a habit of cleaning your hard disk to remove temporary files, emptying the Recycle Bin, and getting rid of system files you don't need any more:

1.Click the Start button Picture of the Start button, type Disk Cleanup in the search box, and then click Disk Cleanup in the list of results.

2.After the utility runs, you'll see how much disk space you can free up.

3. Click OK, and then click Delete Files.

Check your hardware

Is your PC still slow? Take a look at the Windows Experience Index, a method of rating your PC on five key components. Depending on your particular hardware, you might need a new PC or some hardware upgrades. To see your Windows Experience Index:

1. Click the Start button Picture of the Start button, type Performance Information and Tools in the search box, and then click Performance Information and Tools in the list of results.

2. Click Re-run the assessment in the lower-right corner of the window.

3. Check out your base score. If your score is lower than 3, it might be time to consider a new PC.

Keep your PC up to date

One of the best things you can do to protect your PC is also one of the easiest: Make sure you are set up to get automatic updates from Microsoft. If you use Windows and other Microsoft software, such as Microsoft Office or Windows Live Essentials, then you should use the Microsoft Update service. You'll also get notices about new Microsoft software that you can download for free.

So how do you turn on automatic updates? Simple: Go to the Microsoft Update website. If you don't have automatic updates turned on, we'll help you through the process.

Adjust visual effects

"Pretty is as pretty does,” my grandmother used to say. Maybe she wasn't referring to computers, but the principle still applies. Windows includes some stunning effects, but if you need more speed you can customize the settings you want to use for the appearance of Windows on your computer.

1.Click the Start button Picture of the Start button, type Performance Information and Tools in the search box, and then click Performance Information and Tools in the list of results.

2.Click Adjust visual effects.

3.Here you can decide if you want to let Windows choose what's best for your computer, adjust for best appearance, or adjust for best performance.
