I have 250/350gb allocated to windows vista.

Then 100/350gb is allocated to ubuntu.

Inside ubuntu is a virtual operating system (windows xp) which has 10 gb allocated to it.

Why I did all that is beyond me, but now ubuntu does not boot and on my windows vista operating system, the main one i use now, I'm missing my 100gb.

Any approach by which i can get this space back without losing my files on vista would be greatly appreciated.

Inside Windows Vista there is a Partition Manager http://vistarewired.com/2007/02/16/how-to-resize-a-partition-in-windows-vista

What you need to do is format the Ubuntu partition then create an NTFS partition. After this just right click and select Extend Volume to get back your 100gb.

It is most important that you are not relying on the Ubuntu GRUB for booting if you are you will need further instructions before beginning.

If you are not certain refer to this page just in case you need to repair the Vista Boot Manager, for this you will need the Vista installation disc. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392

Make sure you are conversant with the task prior to beginning.

I've used a program called Partition Magic that works great. The version I used was version 8, I think... though, there are probably newer version out now.

I know... it sucks to buy a program to do such a rare task. Maybe you can find it somewhere online? ;)

I'm not aware of any free apps that will do this as well as Partition Magic... not saying that there's no such thing, though.

By the way... just to be on the safe side, you should probably back up all of your important files regardless of any program's claim to be non-destructive. You'd be silly not to.

If you can access your Windows OS, I would try using Partition Magic. If you cannot access any of your Operating Systems, you could try a Live Linux Distro and burn CD/DVD with vital files. I used Knoppix STD back in the day, but it did the trick. Good luck.
