Try this:

1. Make sure you are in the layer with the effect. Hide other layers (if any).

2. Select all (Ctrl+A)

3. Copy merge (Shift+Ctrl+C).

4. Paste (Ctrl+V) the clipboard. It will be on new layer.

Why don't you explain what you really mean. What are you trying to achieve?

Not an expert by any means but I make a second layer of my main edit select the layer and the effect layer so they are visible and merge just the visible layers so as to get the effect I want but still have the basic edit layers untouched.

No need to shout.

No questions asked, the best site for Photoshop tutorials is: http://www.photoeditinglessons.com

All tutorials are in video format, which makes them easier for you to follow along with the instructor. The videos are interactive and very easy to follow, this will help you learn piano three times faster. Good Luck!

I like to run a filter over the whole thing to give it more uniformity. Something simple like adding noise or grain or lightening or darkening.
