I was told by a computer expert, that when he was in computer school, they were advised to go with the free AVG. Norton messes with your computer system. When I had problems with my computer and had to bring it in to the techs, I was told the same thing. Norton is complicated and attaches to everything in your computer. Even when you try to delete it from your system, it is still attached to some of your files and you can't get rid of it on your own. Go AVG.

The best anti-virus is Kaspersky or Norton but they are not free. Kaspersky does offer a free online scan but it doesn't remove what it finds. Second best free are Avast and AVG and others. The Microsoft firewall that comes free with XP and Vista is quite good but unfortunately provides no visibility. If you need visibility, try the free Zone Alarm. Zone Alarm is very good but it is difficult for me to say it is the best. The best firewalls are not free. You have phishing filters in Firefox 3 and IE 7 and IE 8 (Smart Screen Filter) and AVG. It's strictly a question of how often the phishing filter database gets updated with accurate information. It's tough to say which is best.

The full version of both programs were rated in the latest edition of PC world... Norton came in first, AVG third. both work well and according to the article Norton has fixed its problem of slowing systems down and being a resource hog.
