I have checked the Format Cells options, but all I have the option to do is to change it to the Euro symbol. Any help is appreciated !

Sounds like you are doing the right thing - the £ sign should be right at the top of the list in both the currency and accounting windows.
As a get by, you could manually type in the pound sign to one cell and then use format painter (the brush icon beside, Cut/Copy/Paste) to paste the format into the other cells.
Is there a dollar sign above the number 4 key? I have an american keyboard and to get a £ sign I have to Shift 3.

If it is just the once, you can hold down the Alt key and type 156 on the numbers pad to get the symbol. However, this will turn your number into text (I assume we are talking Excel here).
Otherwise format cells, currency, select the £ symbol (it is tucked away way down the list after all the € symbols).
If this is a permanent requirement, change your currency in regional settings in your control panel.

In Microsoft Windows Vista
Click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.
Click Clock, Language, and Region, and then click Change the date, time, or number format.
Note In Classic view, double-click Regional and Language Options.
On the Formats tab, select the country/region that you want to use in the list under Current format.
