Windows Movie Maker support .asf, .avi, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm, .wmv.

You may try this method, it contains 2 steps

step 1. Convert your video file to wmv

Here is a step by step guide about how to Convert videos to wmv: http://www.kooksoft.com/How-to-convert-video-to-WMV-_2215.html

step 2. Insert the video in Windows Movie Maker

I hope this may help you.

hello Randi,

what you need to install in your computer is a mp4 splitter like Matroska, according to the following document provided by Randi Organization. Take care.

"If you just want to play the mp4 files in Windows Media Player, then it is not a codec you need, but an mp4 splitter. The codec is just standard mpeg4, which you already have if you are able to play mpeg4 avi files, such as the divx files you typically find on the net.

Anyway, you can find mp4 splitters, as well as any codecs you might need, here:

http://www.free-codecs.com/

The Haali Matroska Splitter should do the trick for splitting mp4 files. If you do need an mpeg4 codec, then I would recommend either the XViD codec, or the DiVX codec, or both.

I do not know if Windows Movie Maker can make use of directshow codecs and filters. That is why I suggested converting the mp4 files to avi. This also alows you to make use of powerful free editing software, like VirtualDub.

If you want to dig deeper into the whole subject, a good place to start is the Doom9 website:

http://www.doom9.org/

They have lots of useful guides and a forum with quite a bit of information."

Hi, mp4 is a media container which can be encoded with many different codecs, so windows movie maker just supports some special mp4 video files, as I know WMM supports wmv or mpeg2 video files well, so you need to use a right software to convert mp4 video files to wmv or mpeg2 video files for WMM. I am using RZ Video Converter which can convert any videos or audios between different formats with good quality, such as convert avi video files to wmv or mpeg2 video files for WMM, etc. Yahoo or google search and download RZ Video Converter.Hope it can help you.

Don't listen to any of these dummies telling you to convert convert convert... You can play any mp4 files using k lite codecs without converting nothing... However, its hard to find a codec that does not contain broken filters...

File formats supported by Windows Movie Maker

* Video files: .asf, .avi, .wmv

* Movie files: MPEG1, .mpeg, .mpg, .m1v, .mp2

* Audio files: .wav, .snd, .au, .aif, .aifc, .aiff

* Windows Media files: .asf, .wm, .wma, .wmv

* Still images: .bmp, .jpg, .jpeg, .jpe, .jfif, .gif

* MP3 format audio: .mp3

so, you'd better change mp4 to avi, wmv, or asf with some video conversion software for editing in windows movie maker.
