Hello,

I am trying to make a design for a banner but the company require it in pdf, jpeg, TIFF or EPS.

Does anyone know what type of software I can make this with? ie, paint, word, publisher?
Help!!

You need desktop publishing (DTP) software. The "big" names in this field are Adobe InDesign, Pagemaker, and Corel Ventura. Scribus is a free program which might be good enough. You can also use OpenOffice.org (get it from go-oo.org), and just save as PDF, but the results (and control) won't be as good as when you use a proper DTP program. Publisher is one of these, but it's rubbish frankly, and best avoided. If it's a standard banner size the print company makes, ask them if they have a template for your chosen program. Otherwise, you'll need to setup the page sizes etc. to match the final banner before starting your design.

You can do EPS graphics in a "vector graphics" (or "structured art") program like Inkscape (free), or Xara, Corel Draw, etc. Some of the DTP programs also let you export drawings as EPS.

You can also use a normal bitmap image editor (Microsoft Paint is one, but MUCH too basic), like Photoshop, and just save as a TIFF (avoid JPEG, it's complicated for this sort of thing). But I really wouldn't recommend bitmaps, unless they give you a template. It'll probably be really slow to draw using a banner-size bitmap image, or the printed quality will suck.

To create a PDF, you specifically need a PDF writer, like Acrobat.

To create TIFF or JPG files, any graphics editor should save to those files.

To create an EPS file, all you need is a PostScript driver.

The EPS option is the easiest if you don't already have a program that can create PDFs, TIFFs, or JPGS.

If you have a laser printer, it's most likely Postscript, so you already have the driver installed. If you don't have a laser printer, you can download and install any laser printer driver. Get one from HP since they are free. Any laser printer postscript driver will do. When you install the driver and it asks for the printer, just set it to print to File.

After installing it, open up the Printer Properties, and set the Postscript Output Option to "Encapsulated PostScript (EPS)"

Now, you can create an EPS file from any program on your computer.

Just go to print like normal, but select the Postscript printer.

There are many formats to save documents TIFF and JPEG are photo/picture formats (Jpeg is normal for cameras)

PDF is the format for ADOBE ACROBAT and EPS is a post script format available in many programs like Corel Draw.

You don't say what format it is in now which would help guide you

For PDF creation check out the OpenOffice suite: Free! http://www.openoffice.org/

Other than no e-mail client, it beats the MSoffice suite IMHO!

Also take a look at http://www.pdfill.com/ One of their free tools (pdfill pdf tools) will allow you to convert pdf to jpeg, tiff, bitmap or png.

Oh, PDFill's (pay for but cheap) PDF editor is a great forms tool.

EDIT 03/25 16:50 - Be advised OpenOffice can create in addition to PDF, MSoffice compatible (.doc, .xls, .mdb) files. and can import MSoffice files.

PDF probably isn't where you want to go for graphic design. Publisher is very good for graphical designs with text. If you can, you should probably use Adobe Photoshop for more complex graphical presentations. Microsoft Paint is simply too basic for such projects.

Install this program. It is from DOWNLOAD.COM (cnet) and is safe for download. It installs as a virtual printer. You "print" and select this as your printer. The output will be a PDF file. Easy to use

Photoshop.

Everything you save there is default pdf, at least, it has been when I use it. plus you could convert it to Tiff, or jpg, and I'm sure others - and vise-versa. hope it helped.
