Before you go for uninstalling of the operating system, do one thing -- uninstall all the installed programmes from add or remove programmes . It would put no load upon your RAM when you uninstall an OS from your system and allthough you can bypass this and go straight into reinstalling any operating system on your hard drive , it is a good practice to follow. Then you have two options. The first one is to have a start up disc made from windows 98 (among all MS- DOS utilities , it has the most important utility--- the 'FDISK' utility to resize your partitions ) and the second one is to have your operating system CD itself(Windows 2003). Go to the BIOS after restarting the computer and set the first booting option to your CD/DVD drive. Save and exit.
1. Then insert your OS cd in your cd/dvd drive and restart the system. You will be shown the opening menu which would constitute , among all things, of the present partitions of your hard drive along with the file systems. There would be options for you to repartition it. What you will have to do is to follow the instructions on the screen itself . It will ask from you regarding the file system (eg.,- FAT 32 or NTFS in windows ) after it has finished repartitioning. May you be asked to restart the system once partitioning is complete or transfer of file system is complete , please do it to make the changes permanent. If you are not asked about this , fine carry on . After a while you would be asked to start the installation of Windows 2003. The most important part of the whole thing is to follow the onscreen instruction given and you will face no difficulty in getting the os loaded again on your system.
2. If you can , then make a boot cd from the win98 start up disc from some other source . Ask from one of your friends who has still windows 98 installed in his computer and then go the controll panel --> Add or remove programme --> double click --> among options , choose start up disc-- > create disc . You will need a floppy or a CD later on to make a boot floopy. Alternatively , you can search Microsoft for it.
Go to the BIOS again and change the first boot option according to your preference of using floopy or cd. Put it in use and the command line will show up after you restart your computer. After you have been given A : \>, just type ' fdisk ' and follow the menu for deleting any partition and creating partition and logical partition . After you have finished, restart the system for the changes to take place. Put the windows 2003 cd in the cd rom drive and restart again. Follow on screen instruction for transferring file system and installation of Windows 2003.
For the second part of your question , the answer is yes , you can. You can boot from the CD and then make partitions and load windows 2003. Please follow above instructions for that.
3.You know, if your problem is just to partition the disc , then you may not need at all to reinstall windows . Well, in Windows XP pro , by right clicking the 'My Computer' icon on the desktop you get a menu where you get a option called 'manage' and getting into this option opens another window with three main menus (with '+' sign beside them). Selecting 'storage' and therefrom 'Disc management' , one can repartition the drives . There is a similar option for windows 2003. Right click the my computer and select manage and select storage. Does that solve your problem ? It would be nice to know that
