I use Microsoft word 2000 (old i know) and somehow the Microsoft 2010 starter package is now my default program when opening word documents, which I really don't want. When I click into Open With>Choose Default Program, Word 2000 is nowhere to be found, even after searching for it in the search bar. I know its there, as it is on my start menu, and I can access it and use it. It's just very frustrating as I have to open word, then open the file i want to edit. Very frustrating when downloading word files off the internet.

many thanks in advance!

Well it would've been more helpful if you'd told us:

1. Your operating system

2. What happened prior to this going missing.

Since the starter is an OEM version that comes preloaded on new systems, how is it that you had Word 2000 on this new computer in the first place? Did you load it AFTER you got this new computer? Very important to know.

Anyway.....all microsoft office products load in Vista and Win in the same location:

c:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE

There you will see OFFICE folders. It'll be named like OFFICE12 or OFFICE10 or OFFICE 14, etc etc etc etc. Just open these up until you see your old Word.

Find a .doc file on your hard disk.

Right click it, and select 'open with' then 'choose default program'.

Your old word should be there, or under 'other programs'

Check that 'always use the selected program' is checked and click OK.

Do exactly what you did before but instead of looking on the existing list do a search/browse and you will find it in your programs folder usually on the C drive. You will need to select word.exe and then make default when it is loaded

Short term alternative is open using notepad. However using notepad, you cannot format, ie boldface, italics, bigger/smaller font, etc...

Unfortunately, a docx file can not be read by word 2000 (I dont think) so word 2000 uses doc format, so I recommend open using notepad, copy entire document, then paste into a fresh word 2000 document.

You should be able to find it in the Antique section.
