Is it possible to create a new PDF document using Adobe Reader X, or do I have to download another type/ version?
If so, where would I go about doing this..?

The Adobe Reader is exactly what its name implies - a PDF document reader only. If you want to create original PDF's, depending on the complexity of the document, you need either Adobe Acrobat (the program, not the reader) or one of many PDF conversion programs that will convert documents to PDF. Even Word and Wordperfect have their own PDF conversion features, as do many word processing/spreadsheet programs.
Again, it depends on exactly what you want to do, as Acrobat isn't cheap, though you can do a hell of a lot more with it than just a simple PDF converter or program that will save to PDF.
You can learn more about Acrobat at the Adobe site:
Note the prices shown are upgrade prices, not full version prices. You're actually better off getting a suite version, as it's cheaper in the long run.
