Of course you can. There are three ways you can have Ubuntu and Vista together.

1. Dual Boot: Install Vista first, run disk cleanup and defrag (to optimize the disk space in case you need to reduce the Vista partition). Install Ubuntu last and make sure to NOT format the NTFS partition (you can give it a mount point or resize it but DO NOT format it).

2. Virtual machine: Using a program like VMWare Server ( http://www.vmware.com/products/server/ ) you can either install Vista inside Ubuntu or Ubuntu inside Vista.

3. WuBi: You can install Ubuntu as an "application" on vista using the Ubuntu WuBi installer. This allows you to run Ubuntu applications inside of Vista (giving you the security features of Linux on Windows).

First you need either a 2nd hard driver or a 2nd partition on your drive if you only have one. If you only have one drive you can find programs that will create a 2nd partition, but you should back up before doing it. You can create a dual boot, but the easiest thing is a program called Wubi. Rather than installing like an OS is installs Ubuntu just like any other app. It takes care of all of the work for the dual boot and it can be installed from right in Windows. Best part is if you do not like it or want to get rid of Ubuntu you just uninstall Wubi like any other application. It is perfect I have used it in the past and could not be easier. You can download Wubi from download.com here: http://download.cnet.com/Wubi/3000-2094_4-10701841.html?tag=mncol

Windows and Vista are separate operating systems. What they do don't normally affect each other unless you are running Ubuntu on top of Vista, which you can.

http://www.wubi-installer.org gives you easy instructions for installing Wubi on your Windows partition, or you can use something like Virtualbox. However generally all of these will as a matter of course use separate drivers (which may be better or worse) for your hardware.

u first download the ubuntu version from the net

next,u download WUBI from the net

after installing wubi in ur system, please give the required options for the wubi(After installation u open the wubi icon)

options are like this

1)drive location

2)size of space to be allocated to ubuntu

3)e.t.c

then it will install automatically ubuntu in ur system.

Dont worry this is a dual boot .So,u can work both on windows and ubuntu

HI

I advice you to use virtual machine. This is a software, which emulates the work of different operational systems as they could be working in regular mode. You install the application called VMWare or MS Virtual Box, Virtuozzo - this are most popular and commonly used. Upon installing you can make virtual machines running different OSes, thats very convenient.

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 7 Main Edition which is Ubuntu 9.04 based. Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

Linux Mint has a feature called mint4win based on the Wubi installer (Ubuntu) http://wubi-installer.org/ which enables you to install Linux Mint within windows

You keep Windows as it is, mint4win only adds an extra option to boot into Linux Mint. mint4win does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

mint4win like Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

You download the iso. image of Linux Mint then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD

Boot in to windows insert the LiveCD you have just created and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where mint4win comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Linux Mint (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Linux Mint is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Linux Mint.

Linux Mint can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

WORTH CONSIDERING LINUX MINT 6 (also incudes mint4win)
