A couple of my workmates were telling me about the deep net, they were telling me that an internet lies beneath the normal internet that normal users cant access, you need something like TOR to somehow access it, they told me it contains some pretty scary stuff like drugs and guns for sale, rape and child porn movies, private information not meant for public consumption, even hit men can be found there if you know where to look, has anyone here been on the deep net - what was it like and what did you find there

As very unlikely as it may sound, it is mainly true. After taking only a quick look around there is some pretty shady stuff immediately visible to anyone. The majority of sites on there are basically the depths of legitimate websites from the surface web, and anonymous forums etc. However I advise care to be taken if you do look around a bit as it is a pretty major hang out spot for the likes of 'hackers', police and government agents (Supposedly). Basically the sort of people that you just plain don't want to have any dealings with, though the latter aren't really a problem unless you're doing anything illegal as simply being there is perfectly legal. I wouldn't recommend accessing anything outside of the hidden wiki using only the Tor browser as they do admit even on their own page that it is not entirely secure. The most anonymity you're gonna get is by combining Tor with a proxy and a VPN, also make sure you disable anything such as Flash or Java that could be manipulated to give anyone your IP address.

Basically, to sum up, be extremely careful and research the **** out of it before you do anything. Also, the place is riddled with viruses so make sure you've got a decent antivirus (Avast) and firewall up. And I think the ease of access may be exaggerated a little. There aren't pages that just say outright 'Buy your very own hitman here'.

I feel like I'm going on a bit here, but I'm just listing stuff in the order that it appears in my head. I sense a lot of down-votes coming my way but I am legitimately trying to be helpful. Ultimately the risk to interest ratio is not great, so I wouldn't really recommend going there without knowing what you're doing. I don't pretend to be an expert on this, I'm just speaking from a small amount of experience and from what I've read elsewhere. :)

Edit: Looking back at your question, I realise that I haven't really answered it. I don't really want to say what I saw there in case that is interpreted by someone as me going there specifically to look for certain unsavoury things, which I assure you is not the case.

I'm a security researcher I just completed a book - The deep Dark Web - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009VN40DU  I take you inside the good, the bad and the ugly into Tor and how you can have privacy online. Everyone is tracking you and in Tor you can look at the normal web without being tracked, diced and slice and sold every click every day - Do you know what you were doing last Tue. at 7:34 well Facebook, knows - Google knows, Twitter knows - they track you down like a dog ---so Use Tor just to have privacy - If you want to explore start with the Clean Wiki - Buy my book or visit my site _ you will find all kinds of Tor - and Deep Web comments and twist and spins

They must have seen the Hollywood version.

Search engines such as Google only find the top layer of the web, known as the surface web, and most of the material available on the web lies beneath the surface, like an iceberg, which is known as the deep web. Most of this consists of academic papers, government documentations, business statistics and accounts etc.

It is possible to set up private sites which will not be found by search engines. Obviously if you are engaging in illegal activities you will not want to be found.

There is a website in the deep web(it's around the surface of it) called "4Chan"

4Chan once went on "raids" on the blogging website, Tumblr. They posted pornographic pictures of beloved fictional characters, actors, and things. All of Tumblr was panicking. Then, one day, a new fandom joined Tumblr. That fandom is called Homestuck(a webcomic). Homestuck has alien creatures known as trolls. Anyway, no matter what 4Chan did, Homestuck was not weirded out or phased at all. The entire Homestuck fandom had seen weirder **** from their normal things. 4Chan was eventually weirded out by Homestuck, and they left Homestuck and Tumblr alone from then on.

A little vulgar subject but my friend has been on the deep web using tor and he talks about it some times and it is exactly what u said there is on there. It would a stupid idea to ever go on the deep web because if you get caught looking at anything on there you will be in very deep ****.
