Does your printer come with OCR software capabilities? OCR enables a document to be scanned into an editable format such as a Microsoft Word/Excel, etc, document. However, you *must* have this type of software installed on your system, whether it came with your printer software package or a third party source.

Without this type of software application all scanned documents are turned into images. As you see from your recent experience.

There are several printer manufacturers who include at least some minimal OCR functionalities with certain printer models. I am unsure how well these work, nor how full featured one or another would be, you may have some form of this software already installed on your system. It may have been installed when you installed your printer software drivers and other related printer application software.

Open your programs menu, browse to your printer entry, and check if there is a small arrow pointing outwards. This means the program entry has a submenu with other options. If your printer entry has this arrow, hover your cursor over it and read the options there. If your printer has a main application to access different features, click on that main program and open it.

Now, click around and see if in the scan options it offers the option to edit scanned documents. Each printer software application uses different wording for features and options so if you are unsure what you are looking for, open your Help file for that printer.

Please keep in mind that your printer Help files may not be complete. Sometimes when we select the minimal installation, for whatever reason, faster installation, keeping disk space, etc, the Help files are not fully installed. You may need to have your original printer CD handy in order to install additional optional features and Help files. Once you have your Help file dialog box open, click on the option to browse by Searching the Index. This may open a small dialog box which explains that the Help file will need to fist compile a list or data base of every word in the Help files before you can use the Search feature, just click OK, and choose the option on the size of the file you prefer. It will warn you that it may take a bit of time to finish compiling the index.

Once this index is complete search for OCR or Edit Scanned Document, etc. Use different words in your search.

You may also be able to locate information on whether or not your particular printer has this feature is by going into the printer application which allows you to select different types of tasks, or projects. Scroll down the list, click in different drop down menus to display all the options.

You also may be able to locate information on this capability in your printer User Manual. Some printers install the User Manual onto the system, and you may find that electronic version in your programs list. You also may be able to locate it in your file system by opening the Windows Explorer, and drilling down the Programs file listing and then to your printer name, and so on. Once you locate the file for the manual just double click it to open it as normal. It doesn't matter that it is the original copy of the file because that is the file the shortcuts refer to.

If you find you don't have this capability just go to any of the several freeware and shareware websites and look for this type of application. In fact, I will do a quick search for you, hold on a moment.

The page at the above link is to CNET Downloads. I didn't link just a single application because I am not that familiar with this type of application and thought it best you took a look at several of them in order to determine which might best meet your needs.

Good luck and have a nice day.

I am not aware of any free software that allows you do that (they could be out there). The best way I know how is to use text select in the pdf to copy and paste into a word document and edit there. Hope that helps.

word is a text processing program. It cannot do anything with OCR images.

there are OpticalCharacterRecognition programs that might let you edit it.

you can try one of these demo programs: http://www.webfreebees.net/demos-other.html

ABBY is good too [download from ZDnet for 15 day 50 pages free trial]
