I'm using Photoshop CS4. I want to apply a gradient to each individual letter. But when I use the Gradient Overlay layer effect, it applies it to the entire text layer, top to bottom. I want the gradient to be contained in each letter, or at least in each line of text.

You need to create extra color stops in the gradient editor for separate line gradients and separate layers for letter gradients

1. Hold down ctrl and click on the text layer

(Now you have the text selected)

2. Take the rectangular marque tool

3. Hold down alt and click and drag with your mouse to deselect the letters you don't want the gradient to be

4. Now apply the gradient

Do that in every letter
