there is a very good(FREE)program for windows xp system called "startup inspector"

here is the page to download it

http://www.windowsstartup.com/download.php

it is very simple (prety much self explanitory) when you install and first launch the program(BE ONLINE) and click the "consult" button then you match the icon in the "rating list" // to the icon in the "rating legend" at bottom left hand corner of program and this way you will know pretty much what you need to leave checked and things you do not need checked // although of course this program will not know everything you have installed on your system, it is very good at pointing out things that are needed, make certain you do not disable your antivirus // if you are using a free one/// as like i said this thing does not know everything !!!!!

and one thing that is good to keep in mind

you should never have more than ten items starting when your com starts // restarts// less than ten items checked here

The safest option would be to click with you right mouse button on one of the icons, which should bring up a menu. Look for "preferences", "settings", or "options" and select it. You should then look for a check-box for "run on start-up" or something similar. take the tick out of the box and click OK. You will need to try this on each icon, but be aware that not all programs give you the menu\options i described.

The more risky option would be to Start>Run, type in msconfig and click OK. This will open a utility that allows you to change your operating systems settings CHANGING THE WRONG SETTING HERE COULD BE BAD FOR YOUR COMPUTERS HEALTH AND I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY MAYHEM THAT MAY ENSUE! Look for a tab called "Startup" and click on it. You will have a list of all the programs that run at startup, simply un-check the ones that you don't need.

The above refers to XP but I assume Vista is similar.

figure out what program they are associated with. either right click and click about, or help, or info.

once you figure out which program it is with. go into control panel>add or remove programs> find the program> and then click remove/modify. be careful to not remove a useful or critical program such as your video card driver, you sound card driver or your anti-virus.

if it is not in the add, remove program window. then it is most likely spyware or another form of malware. you will need to get a spyware/malware remover. I never got any of those because I'm careful but you could google it. also, beware when downloading these because they could be a virus also. download only from trusted sites.

------------------or---------------------------

click start >then run type msconfig in the box and press enter

select the startup tab and take the ticks out of the boxes that correspond with the icons/programs.

be careful when doing this, it may alter the way your computer starts up but could also speedup startup process.

Right click on a clear blue bit of the Task Bar and select Properties. Click on Task Bar then in Notification Area tick "Hide Inactive icons" then click on Customise. You can then click on each item and select "Always Hide".

I suggest using a program called AutoRuns from Sysinternals. It is free and will give you a significant amount of information to show you all of the different programs and processes that start when you boot your PC, no matter where they are kicked off from. This utility program is free and can be downloaded from: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx. When you see something that you do not want to start in the list all you have to do is uncheck it and it will be prevented from starting in the future automatically.

heres how!!

msconfig may render your system useless as you may disable something you shouldn't!!!

>right click the taskbar and choose properties

>click the taskbar tab

>click customize

>change all the icons in your system tray by clicking on the behaviour and scrolling to the option you want for that icon etc.

i.e hide when inactive, always show or always hide

then ok and ok

just right click on it, the name of the toolbar will display with a tick in it, click on the tick and it will remove it. I f you want it back use the same process to put the tick back.
