I am getting an offer to upgrade to Windows 8 at very cheap rate. My Sony laptop has necessary hardware configuration. Is it worthwhile to upgrade to Windows 8 as and when it is available ?

What are the benefits ?

Windows 8 is trying a radical change in the Windows interface, removing the Start menu and making the desktop into a legacy feature, while also removing a lot of functionality from the primary interface in the name of making it more like a touchscreen or tablet interface.

There is no pressing need to upgrade immediately, as new software always contains bugs and problems that are not found until after wide distribution, and the new interface is difficult to work with. Many people with access to the preview find the new interface very hard to work with. I strongly recommend avoiding Windows 8 until you have had a chance to try out the interface and see if you can live without the lost functionality, and wait until several patches have been released.

Do you have a touch screen? If yes then get it.

Otherwise stick to windows 7. Windows 8 is going to be cheap because it's going to be a bust, just like vista. They are butchering an interface that everyone likes and tossing in a gesture/touch based system that not everyone can use effectively (read almost no one).

@Mick: If you've had more than 5 BSOD since Windows came out (that you didn't cause), then you need to learn some computer skills before complaining. Windows 7 is solid as a rock. I've used it every day for most the day since it came out and haven't had any severe issues (software anyway. Had a junky SSD)

No benefit unless you're using a tablet/touch screen computer. takes 2 screens to get to all your programs by hidden menus. It's like using windows 3.1 with updated graphics. But I would still get the upgrade for the 20 bucks and just store it in case you need to upgrade it for some reason later, but keep win 7. Ive been using it for a while, and I've been streaming my desktop to my ipad with splashtop and win 8 does work good with that and start up time is improved, but windows 7 is way better if youre not using touch screen.

in case you purchase the DVD, you're maximum in all probability nonetheless no longer able to enhance to domicile windows 8 professional. the only thank you to place in domicile windows 8 professional is that in case you do it an analogous way as I did, a sparkling deploy. which skill formatting all the pc to place in domicile windows 8 yet you will prefer the completed version of domicile windows 8 to try this (purchase the OEM DVD). My suggestions is to do a sparkling deploy particularly of an improve considering there may well be much less issues in case you do it that way. Upgrading could make you eventually finally end up with subject concerns. ------- definite, do a sparkling domicile windows 8 professional deploy. So, purchase the OEM domicile windows 8 professional disc and deploy. no would desire to enhance, only boot into the domicile windows 8 DVD without going into domicile windows 7 and only format your pc from there (swifter) and then only deploy it. plenty extra desirable this way than improve. yet make certain you have your stuff sponsored up and characteristic each and all of the drivers downloaded (you will prefer it).

Absolutely. They are offering now cheap upgrades all over. Do take advantage of them, and install W8 when available. The benefits are the usual ones with any upgrade. Brings everything up to date and takes advantage of the most recent technologies. ☺

Although most comments nearly right, I like to add:

Intelligence level will be different b/w vista or win7 to 8. Cheap rate, go for it, although shortcuts are coming to switch over to classic interface.

Windows 8 will be a good choice if you're using it on a phone or tablet. It's a disaster on actual computers. You can see a video with the new "features" ay http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxbHawhzACA and decide if you want to deal with it.

yes always upgrade asap because old versions keep on crashing and you loose all your personal data such as photos, videos, music files and what not which makes you cry
